EPQ lesson - 11/07/18

This was our last EPQ lesson before we break off for summer, so Miss gave out a lot of information and tips to aid us with our summer work and research. She mentioned going over our working title, and checking to see if it was too broad, in which we would need to narrow it down to make researching and writing a dissertation easier. Miss also advised that we take advantage of the summer holidays, and use the time to attend lectures, interview people/ go to museums or galleries etc. As my topic centralises around depression as an illness, and why authors should include characters with depression (to spread awareness), I intend on interviewing someone suffering with depression to get a deeper insight on how learning about it in their youth would have helped them cope with it in the foreseeable future.

We were then given the Assessment Objectives (AOs):

AO1 (20% - 10 marks):
Manage: Identify, design, plan and carry out a project, applying a range of skills, strategies and methods to achieve objectives.

AO2 (20% - 10 marks):
Use Resources: Research, critically select, organise and use information, and select and use a range of resources. Analyse data, apply relevantly and demonstrate understanding of any links, connections and complexities of the topic.

AO3 (40% - 20 marks):
Develop and Realise: Select and use a range of skills, including, where appropriate, new technologies and problem-solving, to take decisions critically and achieve planned outcomes.

AO4 (20% - 10 marks):
Review: Evaluate all aspects of the extended project, including outcomes in relation to stated objectives and own learning and performance. Select and use a range of communication skills and media to present evidenced project outcomes and conclusions in an appropriate format.

We were then assigned to a supervisor, who we need to arrange a meeting with before we break off for summer. Arranging the meeting ourselves promotes independent learning and responsibility. We are encouraged to make detailed notes of what is discussed in the meeting, as we later need to fill in page 5 of the CRF in response.

In preparation for our first meeting with our supervisors, Miss gave us the task of thinking about what we want to discuss in the meeting, and preparing questions for our supervisor.

The questions I have so far are:

- Would it be beneficial to talk to someone with depression about the topic? And how would I go about this?
- How can I link this well to the course I want to do in uni?
- Would you say my question is too similar to what I do in English lit?
- How will I choose books to study, or do you think I should leave this out?
- What skills do I need to refine before I begin researching?
